Welcome to Protection Island

Protection Island is unique among the Gulf Islands in that it is part of the municipality of Nanaimo and benefits from many City services including mains water connection, and is serviced by hydro, cable, and phone.

With a commute time to Nanaimo by boat of only 5-10 minutes (15-20 if rowing/kayaking) or 10 minutes on the passenger ferry,  Protection Island’s  appeal is its’ proximity to City amenities, whilst preserving a peaceful island lifestyle.

Home to approximately 350 year round residents, and a multitude of birds and animal life, the people who live here regard it as a true gem and a haven from the busy-ness of  town and yet still with an easy connection to Nanaimo for work and services. Many residents work in town and commute each day.

Our island ferry service provides connection from 7 am to 10 pm weekdays and 8am-10pm on weekends. (times may be extended in the summer season)

There are no shops or cafes on the island but Protection Island is home to the Dinghy Dock Pub – Canada’s only floating pub and restaurant!
